The classes are FREE and open to anyone who feels they may benefit from more information and support on this important subject. Topics will include: Understanding Grief, Remembering, Role Changes, Support Systems, Stress and Coping. To benefit the most, you will want to attend all of the classes.

Please call Lori Graham or Cindy Higgins at (208)983-1700 for information on the next scheduled series of classes, or EMAIL.

Hospice Volunteer Training Program

Volunteers ARE THE HEART of Hospice.   Syringa General Hospital (SGH) Hospice periodically conducts a 2 day training program for mature and caring individuals who desire to volunteer with the only Hospice in this area.  Hospice is more than a place – it is a philosophy of care for persons at the end of life.  Hospice seeks to enhance the dying person’s quality of life and to provide support for family and other caregivers.  We at SGH Hospice work as a team and focus on the hope that every day will be the best that it can be for the patient and their family.  Volunteers help to make this a reality. For more information call Cindy at (800)772-5137 or (208)983-1700, extension 250.

Diabetes Self-management Education Program

Syringa Hospital's Diabetes Self-management Education Program (DSME), established in 2005, is the only program of its kind recognized by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) between Lewiston and McCall, Idaho.  The ADA is the nation’s leading non-profit health organization supporting diabetes research, advocacy, and information for health professionals, patients, and the public. Many people don’t realize that ADA recognition encourages greater participation in diabetes education by allowing the patient’s insurers to be billed for the program.

In our area, 6.8% of the population has a primary diagnosis of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.  Pre-diabetes and gestational diabetes cases are identified, but at a lower rate.  This past year Syringa’s DSME program provided 180 hours of training and 141 patient visits.

The primary objective of Syringa’s Diabetes Self Management Program is to provide area residents education opportunities which will minimize and delay complications associated with diabetes such as heart attack, stroke, blindness, amputation,  loss of teeth, gum disease, kidney failure, and nerve damage.  Educators believe that the best plan is one that fits the person’s lifestyle.  The classes are set to answer questions and concerns and to deliver information to each individual on a personal level.

Diabetes is a serious disease for which there is no cure.  However, most diabetics can lead normal lives.  Syringa hosts a Diabetes Support Group the 3rd Monday of each month from 1:30PM – 3:00 PM at the Soltman Center,  618 West Main Street in Grangeville.  For more information on Syringa’s Diabetes Self Management Education Program, contact Judy Gehring at (208)983-8588.
